Necks

2013 / protection brief

3 neck pieces that protect the neck from exterior forces. However each of them still has a critical weakness: a spot that is left unprotected and that highlights a location in the neck that if pierced or simply strongly pressured could lead to terrible ends (blood drainage, asphyxiation and lost of control of the right hand).

I heard about Naomi Filmer's work in the interim show. Her practice between disciplines attracted me and marked the starting point of my response to the Living Bridge brief.

Looking at jewelry that is more than jewelry

Looking at prosthetics and good posture

Looking at restricted jewelry

As my attention seemed to focus on necks, I decided to study and understand them more. (anatomy of necks).

Salvador Dali had an interesting thought about the human body. He thought it was illogically constructed because the hard structure is in the inside and the soft material is in the outside. On the other hand, he praised eggs as the perfect structure. That observation was exactly what came to my mind when I was discovering all the fragilities that the neck has.

Necks are extremely interesting.

It forms an anatomical bridge, connecting the head and the body; consequently its main function is being a highway for all impulses of information and feedback, making it a crucial part of the human structure. Paradoxically, the neck is also the only area where the skeleton doesn't protect vital organs like the trachea or major arteries... making it the most fragile region of the human body.

To communicate this idea of vitality and fatality I created 3 neck pieces that protect the neck from exterior forces. However each of them still has a critical weakness: a spot that is left unprotected and that highlights a location in the neck that if pierced or simply strongly pressured could lead to terrible ends (blood drainage, asphyxiation and lost of control of the right hand).

The material for this piece was plaster bands because when we break something in our body, doctors cover it with it (plaster bands is closely associated with that and visually recalls those circumstances). At the same time, it is not enough strong material to protect correctly. So there is a question: why is it used in hospitals I think it brings an interesting contradiction to the piece. Plus it's white.
